### Can I sue a church for abuse by a priest or pastor?
Usually, yes. The claim is typically against the church, diocese, religious order or denomination for negligent hiring, supervision or retention, or for concealing what it knew. Courts generally allow these claims as long as they can be decided without ruling on religious doctrine.

### Is it too late to file a clergy abuse claim from decades ago?
Not necessarily. Many states have extended deadlines for childhood abuse well into adulthood, and some opened revival windows that let old claims be filed. Whether an old claim is still open depends on the state and the type of defendant, so it is worth having a lawyer check even if the abuse happened 30 or 40 years ago.

### What happens to my claim if the diocese files for bankruptcy?
Bankruptcy pauses lawsuits against the diocese, and survivors file claims in the bankruptcy case instead, usually by a court-set deadline called a bar date. Most diocese bankruptcies end with a settlement trust that reviews and pays claims. Missing the bar date can cut off a claim, so survivors should act quickly once a filing is announced.

### Are clergy required to report child abuse?
In many states, yes. A federal summary of state laws current through May 2023 found that about 29 states and Guam name clergy as mandated reporters, and about 16 more require any person to report. Some states let clergy keep confession-based information private; others deny that privilege in child abuse cases.

### Does it matter what denomination the church belongs to?
The legal theories are the same, but the structure of the defendant matters. A Catholic diocese, a religious order, a national denomination and an independent congregation are organized differently, which affects who supervised the abuser, who holds the records and who has insurance.
